Xfile youtube6/5/2023 ![]() ![]() And, in case anyone had any doubts about Scully's romantic feelings for her partner, antagonist/author Phillip Padgett confirms it in Season 6, Episode 18, "Milagro," saying, "In my book, I'd written that Agent Scully falls in love, but that's obviously impossible. Not only does Scully explain that the best relationships are often rooted in friendship but once that switch has been flicked, "the person who was just a friend is suddenly the only person you can imagine yourself with." While the pep-talk is aimed at Shelia and Holeman's friends-to-lovers relationship, it's clear Scully speaks from her experience with Mulder. Aside from Mulder's iconic "I do not gaze at Scully" line, the episode is also memorable for Scully's speech to Sheila Fontaine. However, just five episodes later in "Rain King," Scully has a realization of her own. It's a plot point that is revisited in Season 5, which is when most fans agree that Mulder and Scully's relationship really heated up. During her absence, Mulder realizes how lost he is without her, and when she returns, he becomes fearful of losing her again. This newfound dependency is tested during Scully's abduction. Mulder's tape recordings and admission that he can only trust Scully in Season 2, Episode 1, "Little Green Men," prove how much he has come to rely on her, even when she's not around. Scully, the rule-following scientist, has a partner she is willing to "put on the line" for, as she admits in Season 1, Episode 21, "Tooms." And for the first time, Mulder, the "spooky" loner in the basement, has someone he can trust. But The X-Files' early seasons go in a different direction, choosing to focus on trust rather than lust for Mulder and Scully's growing intimacy. According to X-Files creator Chris Carter, Mulder always had the hots for Scully, saying Mulder "fell" for his partner when she first walked into his office in "Pilot." There is no denying that all the tropes are there - longing gazes, hand-holding and jealousy around formers lovers - that point to a blossoming romance. ![]()
